European Flight Academy

All important information about the European Flight Academy: training offer, costs, requirements & Contact summary.

Offer of training

What is offered?

The European Flight Academy (EFA) is the flight school of the Lufthansa Group and offers an integrated pilot training without previous flight experience. The focus is on preparing the participants both professionally in theory and practice as well as personally for the demanding cockpit job. The training leads to a commercial pilot licence (ATPL) and opens up prospects within and outside the Lufthansa Group.

Timeline & Special features

The training program extends over approximately two years and combines theoretical instruction, simulator and practical flight training. Another point: with the so-called “take-off-promise”, the EFA assumes that in the event of a non-entry, 50 % of the training costs will be refunded within 24 months of the conclusion of the licence.

Costs

Pilot training at EFA involves considerable financial expenses – this is due in particular to the intensive practical phases, high-quality aircraft, simulator training and comprehensive support. For the training line in Germany, a total amount of around 120,000 € is mentioned.

Financing & Reimbursement

The initial personal contribution has been reduced to around €10,000; the remaining amount is provided by a funding organisation or financing partner. Repayment begins only once an annual gross income of at least €30,000 is reached and continues for up to 11 years, with a maximum interest rate of 8%.

What is inclusive?

Included in the price are, among other things, theoretical training, flight and simulator hours with modern fleet, support by experienced instructors, accommodation and flight training locations with good infrastructure. However, additional costs for medical examination, English language proofs, should be included, if applicable. Visas (for training abroad) and standard of living are taken into account.

Requirements

In order to apply to the EFA, interested parties should meet the following criteria: a minimum age of 18 years, a valid aviation medical class 1 examination, good knowledge of English and a selection procedure with test and interview. In addition, a high degree of motivation, willingness to learn and a sense of responsibility are required – the path to becoming a pilot is demanding.

Application process

The application process includes an online application, possibly an aptitude-diagnostic test (e.g. DLR test) and a personal selection interview. Those who are successful receive a training contract and can start the training.
