Overview & Location

The glider racing club Mariazell operates the airfield Mariazell Airport (ICAO: LOGM), which is considered an ideal location for Alpine gliding. The square is located in Mariazell, Styria, nestled between the Alps – a geographical location that is particularly suitable for route and thermal flights.

The airfield has two runways: a paved asphalt runway (500 m × 18 m) and a grass runway (500 m × 30 m), as well as a gas station for AvGas and MoGas. The altitude is about 860 m (2,820 ft), which creates good conditions for gliding with Alpine conditions and pronounced thermals.

Offer of training

At the Mariazell airfield, a complete basic gliding training is offered, with a theoretical and practical component. The association is aimed at beginners as well as at people who want to fly specifically in alpine terrain. In addition to the training, it is also possible to get to know the Alps with experienced pilots by means of round-trip or thermal flights – ideal for gaining initial experience with alpine gliding.

Performance Details
Practical training approximately 15 h flight time (of which at least 10 h with instructor), at least 2 h solo flight, at least 45 landings, at least 1 cross-country flight (50 km solo or 100 km with instructor)
Theoretical training Aerodynamics, operational procedures, performance & Planning, aviation law, meteorology, engineering/instrumental science, human performance :
Circuit/introduction flights (Alpine visibility/thermics) With experienced pilot in a double-seater sailplane or powered sailplane – depending on availability and weather conditions

For the complete gliding training, the guide price is about 1,600 €. In addition, apply for the club membership and if applicable. In FIGS. Towing charges costs.

In addition, passenger pilots or Non-members pay an annual guest membership; separate fees are also charged for towing and use of space.

Conditions for training

The usual rules also apply to the regular operation and use of the space: this includes, in particular, the correct handling of aviation medicine and – depending on the start-up mode – the necessary procedures as well as compliance with the location regulations and radio communication over the frequency 122.105 MHz.

Flights & Alpine flights

If you first want to experience what it feels like to glide silently over the countryside and mountains, you can take part in the offer for round trips or thermal flights. Flights with power gliding or gliders offer impressive impressions of the Alpine world around Mariazell – a good start before deciding on training.
