Alpine gliding at Agathazell airfield

The Agathazell gliding airfield in the Upper Allgäu is a classic starting point for the Alpine gliding and is located in close proximity to the Allgäu Alps. The location on the edge of the Alps opens up good opportunities for slopes and thermal flights shortly after take-off, so that student pilots and experienced pilots alike can benefit from the surrounding area. The course is operated by dedicated clubs and is primarily geared towards gliding and motorized sports aviation.

For visitors and interested parties, Agathazell is a typical club airfield with a familiar atmosphere: At the weekend there is plenty of training and flight operations, at the same time there is enough time for instruction, questions and the classic “airfield life” on the terrace in front of the club hostel. For an own education, direct contact with the resident clubs is the first step.

Aerodrome training offer

At the airfield Agathazell, various training paths in the field of sports aviation are usually offered, which are organized by the resident air sports clubs.

These typically include:

Student glider pilots may be accompanied from the first take-off until the practical examination. In the training, they learn step by step all the basics of gliding – from take-off and landing to laps through to thermal and route flight. In addition, depending on the club, training on motor gliders or ultralight aircraft can be offered, which makes Agathazell particularly versatile.

Due to the alpine environment, the course also offers ideal conditions for further training content such as slope flight or first experiences in route gliding along the Alpine chain. The training is basically carried out by volunteer flight instructors of the clubs, which keeps the costs low and at the same time allows very personal support.

Costs and fees

The costs at Agathazell airfield – as at most club airfields – are composed of several components.
This usually includes an association fee, fees for starts (e.g. winch launches) as well as usage-based flight fees for sailplanes, powered sailplanes or ultralight aircraft. In addition, one-off admission fees and medical examination costs, teaching materials and examination fees may apply.

Since the training is organised through clubs, the total costs are usually moderate compared to commercial flight schools.
Especially for young people and trainees, there are often reduced contributions. For exact amounts and current conditions, interested parties should contact the relevant clubs at the airfield directly.

Training Objective / Scope Typical cost structure*
Sail flying training Complete training from the first start to the license with theoretical and practical components Club fee (reduced if applicable) + start-up fees (winds/towing) + flight fees per hour
Training on powered sailplanes Extension of the gliding licence or stand-alone motorised cruise licence Hourly prices for motor gliders + club fee; additional costs for aviation fuel
Training on UL Three-axle UL licence suitable for leisure and cruise flights UL hourly prices + start and landing fees + club contribution
Trial and ride-on offers Getting to know the gliding or powered flight as a guest on board Package prices per flight or per time to ask directly at the club

*All information is to be understood as general orientation. Concrete prices vary depending on the club and status of the fee regulations and should be requested directly on site.

Requirements for student pilots

Anyone who wants to start training as a gliding pilot in Agathazell should meet some basic requirements.
The minimum age for solo flight in gliding flight is 14 years in Germany, but practical training can usually start a little earlier. For motorized licenses, slightly different age limits apply depending on the type of license.

A medical medical examination is required before starting the training. In addition, membership in the respective association is required, as the training is organized via the association structure. A certain level of physical fitness, teamwork and willingness to engage on the ground even in flight operations (e.g. engaged in aircraft pushing, winch operation or in the take-off team are also included.

Prior knowledge of aviation is not absolutely necessary. Entry is also possible for completely newcomers – many flight students discover the gliding via trial flights or holiday campaigns on site and then remain as active members.
