Overview
The Glarnerland gliding group (SGGL) offers in-depth gliding training at the Mollis airfield (LSMF) in Glarnerland, Switzerland – embedded in an impressive Alpine landscape. The location impresses with a long asphalt slope, open airspace and favorable upwind zones in the mountains, which creates very good conditions for glider candidates.
The training offer is aimed at beginners as well as interested parties who want to deepen their knowledge. Experienced flight instructors accompany you step by step from the first double-seat flight to the solo flight and the license.
Offer of training
SGGL offers a classical gliding training with a practical and theoretical part. The practical part takes place with modern double-seaters and after the first solo flight on single-seater school or club aircraft. Theory lessons — e.g. in air law, meteorology, navigation, flight planning and flight engineering – usually takes place in the winter months. After a positive examination and successful completion of the practical training, the licensing is awarded.
In addition, there is the possibility to join the association after training and fly on as an active member. SGGL thus also opens up long-term prospects for leisure or ambitious sailplanes.
Costs
The total cost of training at SGGL varies depending on intensity, flight frequency and individual factors. However, the following indicative values can be expected:
| Performance/period | Cost (approximately) |
|---|---|
| Complete gliding training up to licence | about 6’000 – 8’000 CHF |
| Annual costs after examination / license (infrastructure, insurance, flight operations) | about 2’500 – 4’500 CHF / year |
SGGL points out that insurance and infrastructure account for the largest share of costs. Flight hours and towing costs vary depending on the use – the more often you fly, the cheaper the individual flight can become. Through cooperation in the association (e.g. for work assignments) costs can be partially reduced by remuneration.
Requirements
To start gliding training at SGGL, no special prior knowledge is necessary — interest, pleasure in flying and basic fitness are sufficient. Usually, the training lasts 1 to 2 years, depending on weather, effort and learning progress.
Before practical training and the first solo flight, training by experienced flight instructors is mandatory. In addition, membership fees and infrastructure fees are part of the training costs. SGGL relies on the volunteer commitment of flight instructors, which makes the training relatively cost-effective.
