Overview
Schänis airfield in Switzerland is regarded as the leading centre of excellence for gliding, powered sailplanes and light electric aircraft. The airfield is located at the foot of the Alps – ideal for thermal and alpine flying with spectacular views of mountains and lakes. The operator is Alpine gliding School Schänis AG (ASSAG), which organizes flight operations and offers both basic and further training.
Offer of training
The flight school in Schänis covers a wide range of types of training, from classical basic gliding training to motor gliding and electric training courses to specialised courses and further education. Modern double-seaters and single-seaters as well as a motorized fleet are available.
Specifically, Schänis offers, among other things:
- Initial gliding training (with ASK-21 double-seater)
- Self-starter training (on ASK-21 Mi, i.e. with own engine start without drag)
- Powered gliding training (e.g. on Dimona HK TTC 115
- Theory courses for pilots of all classes
- Further training — for example for aerobatic flight, passenger flight licence, self-start briefing or as an instructor candidate
Costs and prices
Prices vary depending on training, flight type and intensity of training. Specific fees are indicated for certain offers, others are calculated depending on the effort.
| Training/flight offer | Price/Instructions |
|---|---|
| Self-starter briefing (10 take-offs and landings with ASK-21 Mi) | CHF 1’200.– |
| Alternative training version (charter, flight instructor, flight, engine runtime, etc.) | CHF 870– |
Generally speaking, young pilots under the age of 26 have a junior programme in which the first hours of flight (or a certain number of take-off times) are possible without additional fees – provided you become a member of the appropriate group.
Requirements
Anyone who wants to start an apprenticeship at Schänis airfield should be aware that commitment, a sense of responsibility and willingness to learn are necessary. Formally, the following conditions apply:
- In the case of minors: frequent age at least about 14 years until the first solo flight (as usual in gliding).
- A medical certificate before the first solo flight.
- For self-starter or motor/electric training: readiness to deal with motorized (gliding) aircraft, possibly supplementary theoretical and practical parts.
- For special programs (e.g. Aero-flight, passenger rating, flight instructor training) where applicable, pre-existing basic licence and advanced knowledge.
