Overview

The Schaffhausen gliding group (SGS) operates a gliding school at Schmerlat airfield, which enables interested parties to enter sail flying. The offer is aimed at people who are enthusiastic about gliding and want to get a solid education – from first taster flights to the license exam. The SGS offers both theoretical instruction and practical flights in training glide sails and trainer aircraft.

Offer of training

The training offered by the SGS includes a complete gliding training as well as trial flights for beginners. Gliding training begins with flights in the double-seater (double-seater ASK-21) and later retraining on single-seaters (e.g. LS4) for solo flights and first thermal flights. In addition, a comprehensive training is offered in theory: contents are e.g. Aircraft knowledge, flight performance and planning, meteorology, navigation, radiotelephony and aviation law. For beginners, there is a special trial flight offer.

Requirements

Those who want to start gliding training at SGS need at least 14 years of age for their first solo flight. Before the first solo flight, a valid medical – i.e. a medical examination – is also required. In addition, applicants should bring dedication, motivation as well as willingness to cooperate and camaraderie.

Costs

The cost of training as a glider pilot at SGS is moderate and transparent compared to many expectations. A clear, clear price structure is also offered for trial flights.

Performance Typical price or Budgetary framework
Test flight (double-seater) Approximately 150 CHF (incl.) VAT
Complete gliding training (over 1–2 years) Approximately 4 000 – 8 000 CHF depending on speed and learning progress
Annual costs by training (membership fee, aircraft rental, towing starts) Approximately 2 000 – 3 000 CHF per year
