About SG Thun

The SG Thun (Sailfly Group Thun) is a flight school and gliding association based in Switzerland, which is dedicated to gliding and training of flight students. The location is ideally chosen: From the home airport, flights can be made to the Mittelland, Jura and Alps – without the frequent restrictions in the airspace, as are common around larger airports. In addition to the training, SG Thun offers trial flights and companion flight options so that those interested can get to know gliding.

Offer of training

The training at SG Thun consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The practical part comprises first about 40-50 flights with double seater (with flight instructor) and later solo flights; in total, between 90 and 140 flights are often necessary at the end – depending on personal learning progress.

In addition to regular gliding training, SG Thun also offers special offers such as participation in the Thun aerobatic days (e.g.) B. Aerobatic Basic and Advanced Courses, Safety Training Whirling courses, aerobatic training and competition or performance flight training.

For those interested without ambitions on license: completing flight or Passenger flights are also possible – ideal for a taste or gift of a flight experience. The flight is often carried out with experienced pilots in double-seaters.

Costs

The cost of full training up to the glider pilot licence is roughly estimated at between CHF 6,000 and CHF 10,000, depending on the frequency of training and the pace of learning. A passenger flight can also be booked – often as a gift or a taster experience. Details are available directly from SG Thun.

Requirements

In order to start training, there is no fixed minimum age at SG Thun. A first solo flight is possible from the age of 14, the examination for the license from the 16. Birthday.

Participation shall also be subject to a valid medical certificate issued by a recognised medical practitioner to the competent aviation authority.

For theoretical training, textbooks and documents are provided; the theory examination covers topics such as air law, flight planning, meteorology, navigation, flight performance, radio telephony and more. Who could, should bring good comprehension and technical understanding.
