About the glider flight group Zurich (SG Zurich)
The gliding Group Zurich (SG Zurich) is a Swiss flight school for gliding, which operates its base at the airfield Buttwil (ICAO LSZU). It is aimed at all age groups – from adolescents to adults – and offers both education and community and association life. SG Zurich has modern sailplanes with up-to-date avionics and dedicated, volunteer flight instructors who train competently and pass on their experience.
Offer of training
At SG Zurich, you can complete a full training as a gliding pilot – from trial flight to crafting. A trial flight is offered as a starting point, which is ideal for gaining initial experience and finding out whether gliding suits you.In addition, there is a special youth program: The Young Eagles of Switzerland (YES) program is aimed at young people between 12 and 18 years old and allows free entry into the world of aviation.
Requirements & Authorisation
For training at SG Zurich, the following requirements apply:
- Minimum age for the first solo flight: 14 years.
- Minimum age for acquiring the gliding brevet: 16 years.
- There is no upper age limit – adults or seniors can also enter.
- Prior to the first training flight, written registration and payment of the membership fee shall be required.
- An aeronautical examination is required before the first solo flight can take place.
- The body weight shall not exceed 100 kg.
Costs of training
The SG Zurich gives as a guideline for the complete gliding training up to Brevet about 5,000 to 8,000 Swiss francs – including theory, practice and examination fees. After acquiring the Brevet, the costs decrease noticeably, as fewer tow starts are necessary. There is a membership fee for students, the amount of which varies depending on the age and time of joining. In addition, towing costs are charged separately, typically about CHF 50 per tow flight.
| Performance/Phase | Cost (approximately) |
|---|---|
| Comprehensive training up to Brevet (Theory + Practice + Exam) | ≈ 5,000 – 8,000 CHF |
| Membership fee & Association connection (depending on age / time drawing) | variable (see tariff code) |
| Individual tow flights (during training) | ≈ 50 CHF / flight |
Note: The exact cost depends heavily on the duration of use, the number of flights and the individual pace of learning – therefore the values mentioned are only for orientation.
