Overview and location

The Luftsportgemeinschaft Hotzenwald e.V. operates the Segelflugplatz Hütten‐Hotzenwald (ICAO: EDSF) in the southern Black Forest, not far from the Swiss border. The square is located on the Heuberg near the municipality of Rickenbach, three kilometres east of the village of Wehr, at about 880 m above normal zero – so it is one of the higher gliding airfields in the region.

As a classic gliding airfield, Hütten-Hotzenwald serves primarily for training and leisure gliding. The most important training double-seater is the proven “ASK-21”, which is used in good weather conditions almost every flightable weekend.

Offer of training

The air sports community offers for interested parties a classic gliding training up to solo flight maturity. Practical training is provided by school planes and volunteer instructors — school flight operations are usually from March or April to October. In the winter season, theory lessons can take place if necessary. In addition, a so-called “starter package” is offered, which includes not only practical training but also flight book and textbook.

For those interested, who initially want to inform themselves without obligation, there is regularly a “trial flight day”. There you can as a passenger in the double-seater or motor gliders fly along, get to know the flight operations and find out about the requirements and processes.

Requirements

Before the first solo flight can take place, an aeronautical and an ophthalmological examination are necessary. Anyone who wants to participate in a trial flight day should be at least 14 years old.

The ideal start is through personal contact and a visit on site – so you can get a direct picture of the airfield, club and aircraft.

Costs

Participation in a trial flight day currently costs 30,00 €. For this purpose, a winch-trial flight, lectures and insights into workshop and flight operations are included – including grill sausage at the end.

For full gliding training (starter package up to solo maturity), the exact cost depends on the effort involved, such as the number of take-offs, and is agreed individually. The association recommends that you inform yourself on site in order to receive a concrete offer.
