Overview of the aerodrome site
The Königsdorf gliding centre (SFZ Königsdorf) is one of the largest gliding centres in Bavaria and is located about 40 km south of Munich – with convenient proximity to the Alps and Lake Starnberg. Numerous sailplanes, touring motor sailplanes, towing aircraft and take-off winches are stationed on site – this variety enables both winch launches and aircraft towing or self-start. Thanks to its geographical location, the airfield offers ideal conditions for thermal and route flights – from flat-country flights to Alpine crossings. Stable thermal conditions often prevail, especially in spring and summer, and even wave-flight-suitable flights are possible in foam dryer locations.
Offer of training and costs
The glider flight centre offers complete glider flight training – from the first double-seater flights to independent route flights, where Alpine crossings are also possible. In addition, winch launch, aircraft towing and – if available – self-start with motor gliders or powered aircraft are possible. This makes the course suitable for beginners who want to experience the first flight, as well as for experienced pilots who plan longer routes and challenging Alpine flights.
| Performance/training step | Costs/remarks |
|---|---|
| Membership fee Association (basic fee) | depending on age and club regulations – often reduced for youth |
| Student starts (e.g.) B. Winch or towing starts during training | depending on starting type; occasionally discounted prices for youth/students |
| Training up to license (theoretical + practical) | depending on the individual commitment and number of launches; cheaper than commercial flight school |
| Thermal and en route flights, Alpine flights (by license) | Regular club fees or fee-bearing starts or Participation in operating costs |
Note: The specific fee schedule depends on age and status (youth, student, adult). For young people and students, there are often reduced membership fees and reduced start-up fees. Intra-association training is based on volunteer flight instructors, wind drivers and helpers, which often makes the training more cost-effective than in commercial flight schools.
Conditions for training
As with all gliding clubs, entering glider flying at the Königsdorf SFZ requires a medical flight fitness examination (e.g. Medical Class II / LAPL-Medical), which must be present at the latest before the first solo flight. In addition, minors must provide consent from legal representatives. Interest, time and commitment in the club and flight operations are important: gliding in an association means active participation – be it during start-up operations, maintenance or organisation.
Costs and fee structure
Thanks to the association principle – with volunteer flight instructors, wind drivers and helpers – the costs for gliding at SFZ Königsdorf are comparatively moderate. The running costs are made up of the membership fee and the actual launches; larger fixed costs such as aircraft and technology are shared. Especially for young people, students or beginners, this offers a good opportunity to learn to fly at relatively favorable conditions. Compared to commercial flight schools, this can significantly reduce the financial hurdles because teaching and organization costs do not have to be calculated individually.
