ASW 12 – The pioneer of high-performance glider pilots
The ASW 12 is a single-seat high-performance sailplane that is considered a milestone in the development of modern plastic glider pilots. It was developed in the 1960s by Alexander Schleicher after a design by Gerhard Waibel and was one of the first sailplanes that was consistently designed for maximum performance.
In terms of design, the ASW 12 is made entirely of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP), which was extremely innovative at the time. Particularly striking is the slender, aerodynamically optimized fuselage in combination with the long, narrow wings. This design gives the aircraft an exceptionally high glide performance for its era and a very good climb in thermals.
Flying, the ASW 12 is clearly aimed at experienced pilots. It responds precisely and directly to control inputs and demands clean, predictive flying. Mistakes are less forgiven than with school or transition glider pilots, but reward the pilot with excellent performance with optimal flight technique. Especially in the route flight, the ASW 12 played its strengths and achieved numerous sporting successes.
Even though today it is technically surpassed by modern high-performance glider pilots, the ASW 12 continues to enjoy a high reputation. It symbolizes the beginning of the plastic era in gliding and embodies pioneering spirit, technical innovation and uncompromising performance orientation.
