Requirements for the helicopter ATPL
In order to acquire the helicopter ATPL, applicants must meet various legal and personal requirements. Formal requirements usually include a minimum age of 18 years for starting training and 21 years for obtaining the ATPL(H). A Class 1 medical certificate is mandatory as it confirms the physical and psychological resilience of the aspiring pilot.
Particularly important are impeccable vision, good hearing and a stable general state of health. In addition, a solid basic education is expected; mathematical and physical knowledge facilitates the understanding of complex aerodynamic, technical and navigational content.

Many flight schools also require a good knowledge of English, as a large part of the specialist literature, radio communication and examination documents are in English. Personal requirements such as concentration ability, quick decision-making, spatial imagination and teamwork also play a crucial role, since the profession of helicopter pilot entails a high degree of responsibility.
In addition, a prior PPL(H) or CPL(H) license is generally required, as the ATPL(H) represents an extension and professionalization of existing aviation experience. Systematic preparation and an honest self-assessment help aspiring pilots to successfully master the path to the highest helicopter pilot license.
