PPL(A) – Training content

The PPL(A) training (Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) provides a comprehensive theoretical and practical basis for the safe operation of single-engine aircraft in non-commercial air transport. Theoretical training covers, inter alia, aviation law, aircraft science, aerodynamics, navigation, meteorology, human performance, radio navigation and operational procedures.

In addition, practical flight training shall include the learning of take-off and landing techniques, circling, navigation, emergency and safety procedures and the safe handling of the aircraft in different phases of flight.

The aim of the training is to enable pilots to carry out flights on their own responsibility, in accordance with the rules and safely.

Theoretical training

The theory covers several aviation subjects that are prescribed in accordance with EASA standards throughout Europe. It provides aspiring pilots with all the knowledge necessary for the safe operation of an aircraft – from air law to flight physics.

Typical theoretical subjects:

  • Aircraft law

  • Navigation

  • Meteorology

  • Aircraft General Knowledge

  • Performance and flight planning

  • Human performance (human performance)

  • Operational procedures

  • Communication (telephony)

  • Basics of flying

Practical training

Practical flight training is provided on single engine piston aeroplanes (SEP – Single Engine Piston). Applicants practice basic flight maneuvers, emergency procedures, navigation and the safe conduct of solo flights.

Components of practical training:

  • Initial training and flight manoeuvres

  • Take-offs, landings and circling

  • Emergency procedures and security exercises

  • Navigation over land (cross-country)

  • At least 10 hours of solo flightincluding a 150 NM cross-country flight with two external landings

  • Preparation for the skill test
