Italy – gliding airfields in northern Italy & The Southern Alps
The Italian Alpine and pre-Alpine airfields combine early, often reliable thermals with wide valleys, striking terrain structures and an overall very favorable weather window. Thanks to its southern location, thermals often start earlier in spring than north of the Alps, making Italy an ideal destination for performance-oriented pilots.
Whether Calcinate del Pesce on Lago di Varese, the traditional Trento Mattarello or Belluno at the impressive foot of the Dolomites – the courses offer not only perfect starting points for long Alpine flights, but also uncomplicated infrastructure, hospitable clubs and short distances to the thermals. From here, numerous route possibilities open up along the southern Alps, beyond the Dolomites, out towards South Tyrol or far into the Po plain, whose large-scale blue thermal system often provides for fast forward lines.
Many pilots also use northern Italy as a starting point for the first Alpine crossings, as the valleys are clearly structured and offer reliable valley winds. The region is also ideal for training camps or early season starts. In combination with the scenic diversity, culinary highlights and the relaxed Italian atmosphere, unforgettable gliding moments are created – both sporty and cultural.
