Overview

The airfield Radolfzell-Stahringen (ICAO: EDSR) is idyllic near Lake Constance and offers an attractive environment for sailplanes and those interested in air sports since 1968. Originally founded as a pure gliding terrain, the place has been classified as a special landing area since 2008 and is operated by Flugsportvereinigung Radolfzell e.V.

The grass railway with a length of 710 meters and a width of 30 meters allows take-offs and landings of sailplanes, power sailplanes, ultralight and powered aircraft up to 2 t MTOW. The location close to Lake Constance and the surrounding terrain offer good conditions – in particular the high altitude ridge between Stahringen and Steißlingen regularly provides thermals and thus attractive possibilities for route and thermal flights.

Offer of training & Costs

At the airfield Radolfzell-Stahringen, various training branches are offered under the umbrella of Flugsportvereinigung Radolfzell e.V. These include gliding (with tow or self-start), powered glider pilots and individually motorized aerial sports equipment. The training is provided by volunteer flight instructors.

Requirements

Young people can start gliding training from the age of 14. A solo flight without a flight instructor is possible. The licensing examination for gliding can be carried out at the age of 16, for a possible powered flight licence at the age of 17.

The aerodrome uses VFR and attaches great importance to safe operations: take-offs can be in aircraft tow or self-take-off mode if appropriately equipped; special circling and approach points apply to the terrain in order to avoid overflights of residential areas. Especially in wind conditions (e.g. Föhn or bite) are in demand for increased attention and experience.

Costs & Operation

In addition to the landing fee, additional costs are incurred within the framework of the training depending on the extent (e.g. Association fee, flight hours, use of towing / engines. An exact fee structure is communicated directly via the association. The place has a petrol station (AVGAS 100LL / UL91), but the payment is also only possible in cash or via the service provider mentioned in the place regulations - credit cards are not accepted.

For aircraft outside the club, a PPR (Prior Permission Required) must be granted – no landing is allowed without approval.
