Gliding – Requirements for training
In order for the launch to succeed, aspiring pilots should know the most important requirements for acquiring the gliding licence (SPL). In the following, you will find a clear and neutral insight into all requirements that are relevant before and during gliding training.
The basic prerequisites are first of all a minimum age: the training can usually be started from the age of 14, the first solo flight is possible from the age of 14, the license itself is granted from the age of 16. In addition, an aero-medical medical examination of class LAPL or SPL is required confirming that there are no health restrictions.
It is also important to have sufficient knowledge of German, as radio communications, theoretical training and examinations take place in the German language. A basic technical understanding as well as an interest in weather science and air law are also advantageous. During training, prospective sailplane pilots shall pass both theoretical and practical examinations. In addition, there are prescribed flight hours, solo flights and cross-country flights. Last but not least, membership of a glider flying association plays a central role, as training, aircraft and the organisation of flight operations converge there.
