Further training in glider flight: TMG (Touring Motor Glider)
Continuing education to lead an Touring motor gliders (TMG) is a useful addition for sailplane pilots who want to expand their flying opportunities. TMGs combine the characteristics of a sailplane with a Light aircraft and allow them to do so. Self-employed start-ups, greater ranges and more flexibility in flight operations.

What is a TMG?
One Touring Motor Glider (TMG) is a motorised type of sailplane with fixed propeller and rigid hydrofoil. It can take off like a powered aircraft and at the same time has good glide characteristics for gliding. TMGs are often used as a transition between gliding and powered flight.
Requirements & Contents of TMG training
| Range | Content/Notes |
|---|---|
| Conditions | Valid gliding licence (SPL) |
| Minimum age | 17 years (for registration) |
| Medical certificate | LAPL Medical or higher |
| Theoretical training | Motor science, air law (engine-related), navigation, meteorology, operational procedures |
| Practice scope | Usually 6–10 flight hours on TMG, part of which is as a solo flight (depending on the flight school) |
| Solo requirements | At least 3 take-offs and landings solo (depending on school) |
| Test test | Practical examination with an examiner (not a separate theory test for SPL holders, if the content has already been covered) |
| Eligibility after completion | Driving a TMG within the SPL (registration as a class rating) |
| Receiving the entitlement | Regular flight practice, proof of take-offs/hours in accordance with the specifications of the Federal Aviation Office |
Advantages of TMG authorisation
-
More independence: Self-employed take-offs without winch or towing aircraft.
-
Increased range: Ideal for route flights and excursions.
-
Transition to powered flight: TMG is a good intermediate step before LAPL(A) or PPL(A) training.
-
Security: Engine support increases the possibilities for action in difficult weather or terrain situations.
How to find a flight school for TMG training?
Interested parties should pay attention to the following points when looking for a flight school:
-
Admission to school by DTO or ATO
-
Experienced TMG flight instructors
-
Well-maintained TMG fleet (e.g.) B. Grob 109, Dimona, Fournier
-
Transparent cost structure
-
Option for TMG chartering After training
On Pilotenausbildung1.de you can compare flight schools in Germany, view contact details and find out about the scope of the respective TMG training – without training being offered themselves.
Extension of gliding (SPL) to TMG
| Providers | Typical costs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Association | Approximately € 1,260 – € 1,600 | 810 € for flight hours (minimum size), about 200 € teaching material, about 250 € examination fees; in real life often more than 6 flight hours necessary. |
| Flight School | Approximately €2,000 – €2,300 | Typical training scope 8–10 flight hours; commercial flight school → higher costs. |
| General cost range (Germany-wide) | 1.500 € – 2.500 € | Total usual costs for SPL pilots, depending on flight hours, location and club/school model. |
