Ultralight Flying (SPL) – Exams & Timeline
The exam for the Sport Pilot License consists of several parts that check both theoretical and practical skills. Examiners are approved by the umbrella associations (DAeC or DULV).
The theoretical part interrogates, among other things, air law, meteorology, navigation, technology and human performance.
The skill test shall include flight preparation, safe conduct of the flight, emergency procedures and precise landings in realistic conditions.

Overview of theoretical examination subjects
| Field of expertise | Content focuses | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft law | Airspace, privileges & Duties, flight operations rules | Basis for safe participation in air transport |
| Navigation | Map reading, course calculation, flight planning | Practically relevant for cross-country flights |
| Meteorology | Weather Science, Clouds, Wind, Fronts | Important part for flight decisions |
| Technique/Aerodynamics | Aircraft engineering, engine, propeller, aerodynamic fundamentals | UL-specifically adapted |
| Human performance | Physiology, stress, perception, safety | Part of the Aviation Human Factors |
| Conduct in special cases | Emergencies, evasion rules, safety procedures | Important for the Practical Part |
| Radiotelephony (BZF) | Radio techniques, phraseology | BZF I/II is tested separately |
Skill test
The SPL skill test shall be conducted after all training content and a minimum flight time has been reached. In doing so, the examiner evaluates:
-
Pre-flight inspection & Flight preparation
-
Safe handling on the floor
-
Take-off and landing (Incl. ) Short and long track
-
Climbing, descent and cornering
-
Navigation task (cross-country flight)
-
Emergency procedures (e.g.) B. simulated external landing
-
Flight in airspace and radio communications
The examiner ensures that the pilot guides the UL aircraft safely, predictively and in compliance with the rules at every stage.
Requirements for examination approval
In order to be admitted to the SPL test, it is usually necessary to:
-
Minimum age: 17 years (Start of training possible from 16)
-
Proof of the Requirements for flight instruction According to model
-
Confirmation of the flight school on examination maturity
-
Valid medical certificate (LAPL medical or sport fitness per convoy)
-
Successfully completed theory training
-
Proof of: Radio-telephone certificate (if BZF is needed)
Duration & Costs of tests
The tests themselves cause – depending on the association and examiner – additional costs. Typical factors:
-
Theoretical test: Approximately 80–150 €
-
Skill test: Approximately 150–300 €
-
Fees for documents, association membership etc.: variable
