ASW 15 – Classic high-performance sailor of the standard class
The ASW 15 is a single-seater high performance sailplane developed in the 1970s and has long been one of the most successful standard class glider pilots. It comes from Alexander Schleicher and was designed by the constructor Gerhard Waibel. The aim was to create a powerful, but at the same time well-manageable aircraft for sporty gliding.
The ASW 15 is made entirely of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) and has slim, aerodynamically optimised wings with a span of 15 metres. This design enables very good glide performance as well as excellent thermal flight characteristics. Especially in weak thermals, the ASW 15 can play its strengths and gain height efficiently.
Flying, the ASW 15 is considered balanced and pleasant to control. It responds precisely to tax input without being overly critical, making it suitable for ambitious club pilots as well as experienced competition pilots. Their good-natured behavior in slow flight conditions makes them a reliable companion on long distance flights.
For many years, the ASW 15 was extremely successful in national and international competitions and decisively shaped the standard class. Today it is still found at many airfields and is appreciated for its performance, reliability and timeless construction. The ASW 15 stands for classic performance gliding at a high level and remains an important chapter in the history of gliding.
