ASW 20 – Legendary competitive sailor of the 15-meter class
The ASW 20 is a single-seater high-performance sailplane of the 15-metre class and is considered one of the most successful competition aircraft of its time. It was developed in the late 1970s by Alexander Schleicher based on a design by Gerhard Waibel. The aim was to create a glider that combines the highest performance with easy-to-manage flight characteristics.
In terms of design, the ASW 20 is made entirely of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP). The very slender wings with modern profiling ensure an excellent sliding performance and an excellent climbing capacity in the thermal industry. Many variants of the ASW 20 are equipped with water ballast, which allows it to be optimally adapted to strong weather conditions and competitive requirements.
From an aeronautical point of view, the ASW 20 is characterized by extremely precise and sensitive control behavior. It demands clean, focused flying, but rewards the pilot with high performance and excellent handling. This is aimed primarily at experienced pilots and ambitious competitors who want to exploit the full potential of a powerful 15-meter sailor.
The ASW 20 achieved numerous national and international competitive successes and decisively shaped the 15-meter class over many years. Even today, it enjoys an excellent reputation and is regarded as a milestone in modern performance gliding. It stands for technical innovation, uncompromising performance and the success story of classic competitive gliders.
