ATPL(A) Examinations – Information for aspiring commercial pilots

The Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) is the highest licensing level in civil aviation and a prerequisite for acting as responsible pilot on multi-pilot commercial aircraft. The way to this is through a demanding theoretical training and an extensive examination phase. On this page you will find an overview of the contents, processes and requirements of ATPL(A) Tests in Germany.

Structure and scope of the ATPL(A) theory examinations

The theoretical ATPL examination is carried out in Germany by the Federal Aviation Office (LBA) decreased and includes in total 14 compartmentsof which:

  • Air Law (Air Law)

  • Aircraft General Knowledge

  • Flight planning

  • Performance performance

  • Principles of Flight

  • Human performance

  • Meteorology

  • General Navigation

  • Radio navigation

  • Operational procedures

  • Mass & Balance

  • Instrumentation

  • Communications (VFR and IFR)

The tests are carried out in multiple-choice format and on the computer.

Requirements for examination approval

In order to be admitted to the ATPL theoretical theory test, the following conditions shall be met, inter alia:

  • Completed theoretical training in an approved flight school (ATO)

  • Passed internal pre-exams (“School Exams”)

  • Medical Class 1 recommended for later licensing

  • Proof of sufficient English proficiency, especially for IFR and communication subjects

The flight school then enrolls the student at the LBA for an examination.

Test sequence

  • The exams are taken in several so-called “sessions”.

  • Overall, 6 examination sessions within 18 months available.

  • Each exam consists of a fixed number of questions and a time limit.

  • Failed compartments can be repeated twice.

Those who successfully complete all 14 subjects will receive the ATPL theory certificate.

Validity and further steps

The existing ATPL theory is 7 years from passing the last theoretical examination valid – until the granting of the CPL/IR license.
In the practical part, the following follow, among other things:

  • CPL(A) Skill test

  • IR (instrument rating)

  • Multi Crew Cooperation (MCC)

The ATPL license is initially ‘frozen ATPL’ issued. It becomes “unfrozen” once the practical requirements such as flight experience and hours on multi-pilot types are met.
