FAQ – Questions & Responses
What is the CPL(A) license?
The CPL(A) (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) is the commercial pilot license for aircraft. With her you can fly as a pilot for payment, e.g. in charter, sightseeing or air taxi operations.
How is the CPL(A) different from the PPL(A)?
The PPL(A) is a private pilot license and does not allow commercial flights. With the CPL(A) you can carry out commercial assignments and act as a commercial pilot. Theory, practice and medical requirements are significantly higher.
What requirements do I need for the CPL(A)?
For the CPL(A), you need a valid PPL(A), a Medical Class 1, at least 150 flight hours before starting your practical training, and sufficient English language skills (ICAO Level 4 or more).
How many flight hours are required for the CPL(A)?
At least 200 total flight hours are required, part of which is from PPL(A) training. Specific requirements such as cross-country flights must also be met.
What are the CPL(A) costs?
The costs are typically between 25,000 and 45,000 euros – depending on flight school, aircraft types, theory costs, examination fees and possible additional rights such as IR or MEP.
Is it possible to make the CPL(A) part-time?
Yes. The modular training path enables flexible time division. The training can be part-time, but then usually takes longer.
How long does CPL(A) training take?
Training takes about 6-12 months in the full-time model. Modular or part-time work may require 12–18 months or more.
Which theory subjects belong to the CPL(A)?
The subjects include, among others, Air law, navigation, meteorology, flight planning, aerodynamics, radio navigation, engine science and human performance.
How do the theory exams work?
The examination is carried out by the Aviation Authority and consists of 13 subjects with multiple-choice questions. Multiple trials and sessions are allowed, but limited in time.
What awaits me in the practical examination?
You will conduct a test flight with an examiner. This includes manoeuvres, navigation tasks, take-offs and landings as well as emergency and abnormal procedures.
Do I need Medical Class 1?
Yes, a valid Medical Class 1 is required for each commercial pilot license. It must be renewed regularly.
What English skills do I need?
The CPL(A) requires at least ICAO Level 4. The language test is taken separately and must be renewed regularly.
Can I change to an airline with the CPL(A)?
Direct entry is rare. You usually need the ATPL theory (frozen ATPL) and a typerating. However, the CPL(A) is an important building block.
What does “frozen ATPL” mean?
“Frozen ATPL” means that you have passed the ATPL theory but do not yet have enough flight hours for a full ATPL license. With more experience, the ATPL “taut”.
Is the instrument rating (IR) mandatory?
It is not mandatory for the CPL(A), but it makes a lot of sense. Many jobs require an IR.
Can I become a flight instructor with CPL(A)?
Yes, after an additional FI training (Flight Instructor) you can work as a flight instructor.
What jobs are open to CPL(A) pilots?
Professional fields include: scenic flights, charter, aerial photography and surveying, parachutist drop-off, business flight or flight school – depending on the additional authorization.
Is the CPL(A) valid in Europe?
Yes, an EASA-CPL(A) is applicable and fully recognised in all member countries.
Is the CPL(A) recognised outside Europe?
Recognition depends on the country. Often conversions and additional checks are required.
Can I build from the PPL(A) modular to the CPL(A)?
Yes, this is even the most common way: PPL → Night Flight → Hour Building → CPL Theory → IR/MEP → CPL Practice.
Which aircraft will be used for CPL(A) training?
Mostly single-engine SEP aircraft such as Cessna 172 or Piper PA-28. For MEP training typically DA42 or Piper Seneca.
Are simulator hours part of the CPL(A)?
Yes, part of the training can take place in the FNPT or FSTD simulator – especially in instrument flight training.
How does the administrative notification process?
You submit your documents via the flight school or independently to the aviation authority: Medical, flight hours, training confirmation and examination registration.
How does my CPL(A) remain valid?
Through regular medical checks, flight hours and depending on the authorization a Proficiency Check with an examiner.
What radio certificate do I need?
For commercial operations, the AZF is usually required, for visual flight BZF I or II is sufficient.
Is there a maximum age for the CPL(A)?
No. As long as you pass Medical Class 1, you can also acquire the CPL(A) at an older age.
How demanding is the training?
It is considered challenging, especially the theory. With consistent preparation and a good flight school, however, it is well feasible.
Can I finance the training?
Many flight schools offer installment payments or partner banks. There are also specialized pilot loans.
What are the advantages of the CPL(A) pathway over an integrated ATPL training?
You have more flexibility, can allocate costs and gain experience earlier – ideal for people who cannot learn full-time.
How do I find a suitable flight school?
Pay attention to licensure, aircraft fleet, cost structure, teaching experience, learning materials and assessments. Pilotenausbildung1.de helps with the comparison.
Does the CPL(A) also apply to helicopters?
No. For helicopters you need a CPL(H). The contents are partly similar, but separate licenses.
