Germany – gliding airfields on the edge of the Alps

The German Alpine edge is one of the most fascinating gliding regions in Europe. Between Lake Constance and Berchtesgadener Land, airfields are lined up, which benefit from their unique location between pre-Alpine hills and towering mountain ranges. For gliders, they offer a rare combination of challenging meteorological conditions, impressive landscapes and exceptional route flying opportunities.

The area is characterized by slope winds on the steep foothills, strong thermals over sunlit slopes and – in suitable weather conditions – the famous Alpine wave. This allows flights to high altitudes, often far beyond the summit peaks. No wonder, then, that the Alpine edge is considered a training and competitive region of international reputation. Among the most famous gliding airfield are Kempten-Durach, Königsdorf, Sub-weathers, Oberpfaffenhofen, Ohlstadt, Bad Wörishofen and in the east Bad Reichenhall.

Each of these places has its own flying tradition and peculiarities. While in Unterwössen the focus is on alpine training and training programmes, Königsdorf is considered a centre for ambitious route pilots who regularly achieve impressive flight distances along the Alpine arc. Kempten, on the other hand, benefits from its location in the Allgäu, where thermals start early and slope wind conditions are often stable.

In addition to aviation diversity, the environment also plays a major role. The proximity to lakes, mountain pastures and striking peaks makes flights on the edge of the Alps a visual experience. The view of Zugspitze, Watzmann or the Allgäu High Alps accompanies pilots during long distance flights or relaxed courses.

At the same time, the Alpine region has special requirements. Gliders have to master weather swings, valley wind systems and the partly complex airspace structures. Many clubs on the edge of the Alps therefore rely on intensive instruction programmes and experienced flight instructors to introduce new pilots safely to alpine aviation.

All in all, the gliding airfield on the German edge of the Alps are an ideal area for pilots who want to combine flying challenges with scenic beauty. They offer a mixture of tradition, sporting standards and nature experience that is unparalleled in Europe.
