Gliding aerobatic

The sailplane aerobatic rating enables looping, roles and other demanding flight figures in sailplane flight.

Requirements & License – who can do aerobatic flight

Gliding aerobatic flight includes maneuvers such as looping, rolling, back flight, spinning or turn. For these figures, the normal gliding license is not sufficient – you need an additional Aeroplane rating.

Requirements for aerobatic rating (Germany)

The gliding aerobatic rating shall typically be subject to the following requirements:

  • Valid gliding licence (SPL) must already exist.

  • Flight experience by licence:
At least 30 hours of flight or 120 take-offs as pilot-in-command.

  • Theoretical training:
Aerodynamics in aerobatic flight, loads, safety procedures, airspace rules, emergency procedures.

  • Practical training:
At least 5 hours or about 20 aerobatic launches with the teacher.
They are taught, among other things: looping, roll, turn, back flight, spinning, raised curves, combined figures.

  • Final audit:
A test flight in which defined aerobatic figures are safely flown forward.

The requirements are based on the current European FCL rules and the guidelines of the DAeC.

Costs

The costs vary significantly depending on the flight school, club and airfield. Typical sizes:

1. Course fees

  • Association or association courses: Approximately 150–350 € Participation fee.

  • Commercial flight schools: sometimes higher package prices.

2. Flight and towing costs

Often the largest part of total spending:

  • F-loops: Depending on the location, approximately 40–70 € per tow.

  • Sailplane use: Frequency 0–25 € per flight, depending on the club/aircraft type.

  • For 20 aerobatic launches come realistically 600–1.500 € together.

3. Other possible costs

  • Association fee or guest fee

  • Medical certificate

  • If applicable, Cost of materials (gloves, aerobatic harness, etc.)

➡️ Total costs in most cases:
Approximately 800–2,000 €, depending on the club, towing costs and number of training starts.
