A hot air balloon is an aircraft with a large shell, burner system and basket. Load-bearing connections guide the forces from the sheath to the basket.
The burner heats the air in the envelope. At the same pressure, warm air has a lower density than cooler ambient air.
The displaced outside air generates buoyancy. Whether the balloon rises, maintains its altitude or falls depends on the ratio of lift and total weight.
The total mass also includes people, equipment and fuel. Outdoor temperature and space height affect the available load capacity.
The reaction is delayed. This is why balloon pilots learn to detect developments early on and to plan ahead within the limits of the flight manual.
The three-dimensional representation explains connections. The operation of burners, valves and fuel system is learned on the respective pattern with a flight instructor.
Use this video for preparation and repetition. Practical procedures shall be carried out with a balloon instructor and in accordance with the documentation of the respective balloon.
