Becoming a balloon pilot means more than practicing climbing and sinking. Training includes theory, practical rides, ground work and good decisions.

In the EASA system, the route to the balloon pilot licence is via a declared or approved training organisation. The training combines lessons with exercises on and in the balloon.

Before each trip, the pilot discusses with the ground crew the weather, the starting area, the tasks and clear communication signs.

The case, basket, suspension and equipment shall be inspected in accordance with the manufacturer’s documentation. A prepared crew knows their tasks and adheres to the briefing.

The take-off decision takes into account wind, obstacles and reachable landing possibilities. A well-prepared trip can also be postponed or cancelled.

After the trip, the evaluation follows: What was observed, how did the cooperation go, and what will be improved next time? Thus, reliable experience grows from individual exercises.

Use this video for preparation and repetition. Practical procedures shall be carried out with a balloon instructor and in accordance with the documentation of the respective balloon.
