Your learning goal

Welcome to the subject Air Law of ATPL Helicopter Theory. You arrange legal sources, responsibilities, air spaces and clearances. This video gives you a compact introduction and helps with repetition. The schematic representations and calculation values are learning examples. They do not replace the full curriculum of your training organization or an aeroplane manual. Stop briefly for a task and explain the connection with your own words.

Correctly assigning sources of law

For a legal issue, you first need the right rule area. Part F C L deals with licenses and permissions. SERA contains common rules of the air. The operating rules depend, among other things, on whether a commercial or another company is present. The A I P publishes permanent aeronautical information, NOTAM report temporary changes. A textbook therefore does not replace the examination of the current publication. In exam tasks, you first clarify the state, type of operation, flight rules and aircraft category.

Licence, type and instrument flight

A passed ATPL theory exam is not yet an ATPL license. The exercise of an activity shall include the licence issued, appropriate ratings, the required medical certificate and other applicable requirements. For helicopters, type rating plays a central role. Instrument flight requires the necessary authorization. In addition, the curriculum versions ATPL H for visual flight and ATPL H with instrument flight differ. Which learning goals apply to your course, you clarify with your A T O.

Airspace and release

The airspace class, together with the flight rules, determines which services and requirements apply. A release is not a blanket permit for every maneuver. It shall have a content and, where appropriate, a limit. A radio contact alone does not yet mean an entry clearance. If you are uncertain, ask before crossing a border. Weather limits, obstacles, flight performance and responsibility do not disappear even with a release. Read tasks as a concrete situation, not as a collection of individual keywords.

Flight preparation as a legal application

Imagine a helicopter flight to an unknown landing site. A line on the map is not enough for preparation. Check the permitted use of the space, airspace restrictions, operating hours and current reports. Combine this information with weather, fuel planning and performance. Additional rules may apply to special types of operation. When you ask a question about minimum levels or reserves, you check the exact applicable rule instead of transferring a number from another operating area.

Case in point: Controlled airspace

You are approaching an airspace whose entry requires clearance. The pilot has confirmed your call sign, but has not yet given clearance. Are you allowed to fly in? This authorization does not follow from the mere radio contact. Keep a suitable, safe alternative outside and clarify the release in time. The learning principle is: actively test prerequisites. An expected radio message, an earlier flight and a navigation display do not replace the currently required clearance.

Learning Check and Next Step

Check your understanding. Is a passing theory exam already the license? No. Further requirements and the granting of the licence are required. Is radio contact automatically an entry clearance? No. The required release content must be available. The questions are self-created. Repeat unclear chapters and deepen the subject with the learning goals of your training organization. Sources, chapter marks and the full speaker text can be found under the video.

This series provides basics and supports repetition. It covers the 13 examination subjects, but does not cover all EASA learning objectives and does not replace an approved ATO course. For ATPL(H)/VFR and ATPL(H)/IR, there are some different learning objectives. What matters is the curriculum of your ATO.

Additionally: Area 100 KSA. Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes belongs to the training and is not counted here as an additional examination subject. In the ATO lessons, also train teamwork, communication, decisions and mental math.
